I started a crazy project just before my mum passed away in late 2021 – writing a memoir. At first it was just therapy, but then I realised I had a good story to tell and it became a new challenge.
I wrote down my story in 38 chapters and decided to do it properly. At first it was only going to be a book for me, my family and my kids. Who was I to write a book? I have no experience. English is my third language and I don’t even read much. But I’ve always been writing for myself and my sports blog. I started entering competitions and attended a few writing courses. Then three of the book chapters got published.
Joining Geelong Writers Inc. has helped me a lot. Every Tuesday and Thursday I attend their friendly and supportive Shut up and Write sessions.
I am also well looked after by ‘Team Europe’. I have a Dutch graphic designer, a German writing coach and an English book editor. The help of my writing coach, Kerstin, has been invaluable. I could not have finished my memoir without her.
So, having completed the chapters, I looked back at it and thought, yes, this is not bad. The story is interesting and I reckon I can help a few people by publishing it. It has a strong message.
I am a big believer in trying new things, getting out of my comfort zone, pushing the limits and following a dream. This writing business has certainly pushed me.
I hope you will enjoy my fortnightly blogs towards my next big goal to win a sixth gold medal at the world champs in Townsville next year. I will share tips, experiences, anecdotes, crazy stories. But I will also share parts of the book and more. Stay tuned!
